Solar System Resources

My Kids ALWAYS loved the solar system unit! I'm sure yours do too! It isn't just enough to read out of the book, they need hands-on activities to understand the tremendous distances in space, and games and videos to grab their attention and never let it go!! This is one unit that can ignite not only an interest for a lifetime, but a career in science as well! I hope you and your students enjoy the great resources below.

1.  Scholastic
https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/collections/teaching-content/solar-system/

There are great lesson ideas here of course...it's Scholastic). Some are based on books, some are activities without a specific book.

2.  More Scholastic!
http://www2.scholastic.com/teachers/unit/solar-system-everything-you-need
This site is FULL!  Get study jams, activities for reading and writing, and much, much more!

For center time, or group work don't miss these great out space games and activities!

3.  NASA Space Place
Lots of great games that come straight from the source....NASA!

4.  Interactive Sites for Education
13 Terrific games/sites!!

I've saved the best for last!!  The one thing that is really hard for kids to understand about space is the tremendous distances involved. I've done this activity with my third graders and they are absolutely amazed. We did it in a long hall, and to get to Pluto, we had to go right out the back door. This is my most favorite space activity...kids don't forget it either!! I didn't write it, by the way. It comes from Family Astro.

Hope you and your students enjoy these fun resources.

10 Simply Amazing Math Websites

There are times when only a great math website will do! They teach, review and reinforce math concepts in a fun and entertaining way that keeps kids engaged! Here are ten of my favorites! There's even one for any virtual math manipulative you need! By the way, all are free!

1.

This site, from Funbrain, is full of games all kids will love! If you need a game for a skill, it's here!

2.

You just can't do better than PBS kids!  Many, many, many games here on tons of math strands.  All are totally engaging!

3.

If you just want great games for math fact reinforcement (by grade level) don't miss "Hooda Math". The games are fun, and keep the kids' attention.

4.

To really make math make sense, kids need to use lots of manipulatives. However, we don't often have all of the manipulatives we need for a particular concept.....PROBLEM SOLVED! Be sure to visit the "National Library of Virtual Manipulatives" for ANYTHING you need!

5.

Research tells us that students who do best at higher level math are students who don't do math just to get the right answer, but to solve a problem! With that in mind, this TedEd site has a number of riddle videos to show students. They will need to really struggle to figure out an answer....but that is what math is all about...the struggle and joy of discovery! This will elevate math class to a whole new leve. Best for 4th and up.

6.

Lots of great games, and organized by grade!

7.

"Johnnie's Math Page" is full of games by grade level, plus teacher resources. There's LOTS here so you are bound to find just what you want for centers, or for reinforcement.

8.

Learning multiplication can drive some kids about  crazy  This fun site has any game you could need as you help your students master this skill!

9.

If you aren't familiar with "Coolmath4kids" don't miss checking it out now! If you need a game (cute and easy to play) that really zeros in on math concepts, this is the site for you! Covers addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions for all elementary levels.

10.

Games, Games, and more Games! That's what you'll find (by grade level) on Math Playground! You're welcome!

If you have a favorite math site you use in your classroom, please add it below! We all love to share!!

How Do You Create Decimal Super Heroes?

Decimals can often be one skill that makes a lot of  kids cringe. Teaching it sometimes made me cringe too. It seems like they just "get" fractions, then I would need to throw decimals at them. I'm not gonna lie! When it was time to teach decimals, I heaved a heavy sigh.  So, the hunt was on to make it more understandable to all the kids, and more fun for me to teach. What I was looking for was "Pizazz" to give life to my lessons.

It starts with a "Hook".

I think some of the lessons on-line are pretty darn awesome. They need to be well under ten minutes and to the point to use them as the "hook" for the lesson. What I've found, it a good hook makes all the difference. It wakes everyone up and makes them ready to learn. Check out the ones below:

This is a great one!  It's a freebie from Brainpop!

Reading decimals can get a little tricky. This video is clear, and easy to understand. It is almost seven minutes, but it's worth it.

To include with your lesson on putting decimals on a number line, don't miss this one! It's fun, and to the point.

Some Interesting Lesson plans...We don't always have to reinvent the wheel!

One of my favorite lessons for when it is time to teach how to write a decimal from a fraction, is called "Decimals, Fractions, and Percentages" by Math is Fun. The pictures are very good, and it breaks everything down in easy-to-understand pieces.

Be sure to check out the lesson "Rockin' Fractions" if you teach 4th or 5th grade. It is a song plus lesson plan for teaching decimals. Includes worksheets and more.

When you want a great, easy and fun game to reinforce the concepts, try Decimal War! It can be adapted for any grade teaching decimals. It's a fun activity to either add at the end of a lesson, or even use for game-day.

I found a few pre-made worksheets that might be helpful.

This site has amazing worksheets for all areas of decimals. Each download includes the grading key.
This site is a treasure!

This site has a lot of short little practice sheets. Nice and short. Great for a quick check. They start easy and get harder. Great for differentiation.

One last one that is pretty nice.

The next step is LOTS of fun practice. Worksheets have their place, but fun learning is learning that lasts!

Fruit splat is like Fruit Ninja and is sure to be a kid-favorite!
LOVE that it has five levels of difficulty. Good for 3rd through 5th grade!

This game site has great games for review, plus this game on converting fractions to decimals, don't miss this fun site!

Now for the great review game! This is a Jeopardy game on decimals, fractions and percents that the whole class can play in teams.

Kids will love this one! They can play on their own, but are playing against other online players. It's called "Puppy Race".

Don't miss this book for teaching fraction, decimals and percents! Get it at your local library, or ask your librarian to order it.

I hope the lessons, ideas, worksheets and games are just what you need to round out your decimal lessons. After all, decimal Super Heroes don't just happen, sometimes it takes a little "Pizazz"!  If you have more ideas for other teachers, please add them below!
