Crazy Homophones….Plus a Freebie!

Homophones! If I had a nickel for every parent note that had a homophone spelling error in it, I'd be rich, rich, rich! What's worse, teachers and even professors have the same kind of errors! The problem is, that type of error makes the writer look uneducated, or just sloppy. My job as a teacher is to give kids practice, LOTS of practice, in using homophones correctly. That isn't done with one lesson, it takes lesson, after lesson, after practice, after practice. Luckily, that's pretty easy. Videos, games and activities are all over the Internet to help us get those crazy homophones into kids' heads. We can't start too early!!!

It's always good to start with an anchor chart:

This site has LOTS of great homophone games and activities for teachers and for kids! Lots to choose from here. I have included three images to give you an idea of what is included here. Click on the link below to go to this great site!

Multiplication Freebie!

Some kids come to school dreading the fact that they have to learn the multiplication tables...but it doesn't have to be that hard. All it takes is some math tricks. Since the 6s can really get under a kid's skin, I have included a sheet with a fun way to learn 6 X 6,   6 X 7, and  6 X 8. Then use games to really reinforce those multiplication math skills the fun way. The sites below are perfect for centers, when kids come in first thing in the mornihng, or for group work. Practice makes perfect!!

I think one of the best ways to help kids learn multiplication facts is through games! The link below has a number of good ones that would be great for centers, or to send home for kids to play for practice.

Math Multiplication is a sure winner in your classroom for multiplication practice! Students choose the multiplication facts they want to practice, all are within 100. It's from Multiplication.com, so you know it'a good!

This is a fun one, it's like being at the county fair! Multiplication Gallery from Hooda Math!

Combine your students' love of puzzles with multiplication practice in this fun activity! Choose from the 2'sa to the 12's to practice!

If you need a little spooky fun, try this fun game that's all about multiples!

Make Conferences Matter!

For years I did conferences the normal way. Parents come in, I talk, kids wait in the hall. Things might change for a day or two, but no REAL lasting change in behavior or study habits happened. Then I discovered student-led conferences. It was like a light went on!

I don't know if you have ever tried student-led conferences before, but I think they are the only way to conduct conferences. I didn't always feel that way! It wasn't until I saw the lasting change they made in my students' learning and behavior that I was hooked. The key to the conference, to me, is asking students to sign a contract on something they have chosen to work on that will help them improve. It is really important that the student have the primary choice in what this goal will be. They can be led by the teacher or the parent, but the choice must be theirs or they won't "buy into" it. I have included a free goal writing page below. Just click on the link below the picture.

Have you ever tried to conduct student conferences? If so, please leave a comment about what you thought about the experience.
